One of our delightfully daring and enchanting staff members, Lusanda Mdolo, Head of Behavioural and R&D at Evolution Group, recently took it upon herself to go all the way with her New Year’s Resolution. That being, “New Year, New Me” …. So, she shaved her hair off – Yes….ALL of it!
Wow, that takes a lot of guts and pluck! But the outcome of the decision was more than she ever bargained for. Besides the way she felt – liberated, strong, light, empowered, bold, striking and distinctive – she also realised, when the time came for her monthly appointment at the hair salon (no longer necessary), that she had unintentionally saved R900! The revelation hit her like a bolt out of the blue.
Her decision to shave her head initially, had nothing to do with saving money or redirecting funds. It was purely a “New Lusanda”, starting her New Year with a striking statement. But she realised a very important lesson resulted from her decision = Saving Money.
Now she pondered on her long-term dream of taking her family to Zanzibar. Something which they had on their bucket list. She researched the necessary costs involved, (flights, transport, accommodation, etc), and concluded that by saving hair salon costs of R900 each month, she could afford to take her family on the week-long trip to Zanzibar, within 5 years! With no further effort other than saving the money on her monthly hairdresser appointment, and being committed to not making new debt with this new found disposable cash flow.
“Shave it off” now meant more than her hair, it became her mantra on cost savings. It symbolised “shaving expenses” and scaling down in areas she never considered before.
So, the challenge is out there everyone – Lusanda has set the bar, and she says if she can, you can.
